Worse still, if you use an ad agency your ad will
probably be written by a specialist copywriter who has never had to sell
anything in their life and will use very impressive yet wholly inappropriate
language.
Let me tell you something, you know best, you have
the passion and you have the knowledge, so you write it. Why? Because
advertising and selling are two sides of the same coin and advertising agencies
have a huge tendency to over complicate things.
They will tell you how many awards they have one,
but award wining ads very rarely produce sales. And perhaps more importantly ads
that sell very rarely win awards!
Another problem is that people don’t expect enough
from their ads because they don’t hold them accountable for results and here is
an irony, people try to make their ads do too many things.
Let me explain, an ad has one purpose and that is
to prompt somebody to make contact with you to either buy or say metaphorically
that they are interested in your particular product or service – that’s it.
Do any more and you will confuse the reader and
confused people don’t act. Everything else about how wonderful you are and the
20 different products you also sell, can all be done after they have made
contact with you.
So don’t make the mistake of telling them too much
and killing your message, be very single minded and focused on what you want the
reader to do.
Now a popular line trotted out by ad agencies and
ad space sales people is that you cannot expect to see results for weeks or
months because you need to repeat your ad a dozen times before anyone will see
it and take action. This is a lie that ad agencies hide behind because they
cannot demonstrate a link between the ad and sales. And it is used by ad space
sales people to get you to part with more of your cash, so that they get more
commission.
If your advertising is not working, you must do

When you start to really focus your ads on one
thing and then make a series of small changes you will be amazed by the results.
