"GETTING YOUR FIRST SALE FROM A NEW OR START UP BUSINESS CAN BE VERY WORRYING"

Whether it has been a life long passion of yours or you have been made redundant or lost your job or ever been previously employed at Lehman Brothers, Northern Rock, Halifax or HBos, there is a reality that you need to know.  And it is that when you are setting up a new business and come to that inevitable moment when you start trading and recruiting your first customers, this all of a sudden feels very different to selling in a more established business that has some customers and a bit or recognition in the market place.

There are a few things you should know:

1.

You are an entrepreneur. You aren’t a big company – yet. So ultimately the only person you can really rely on to get things done is yourself. Don’t hesitate to do whatever it takes to get those first sales under your belt, even if it means working weekends.

2.

Don’t be afraid to walk away from a deal. Don’t let the pursuit of success lead to you chasing unsuitable business; it will be a wasted effort that would be better spent chasing or doing marketing to attract the right customers.

3.

Don’t be taken advantage of. Don’t let people push you around because you are new. Stand up to requests for discounts so that you maintain the value of your product in the prospects mind.

4.

Believe in your greatest strength. Most start ups offer something new and unique and are out to change the market, let your passion for this change and your passion and knowledge for your product shine through in everything you say and do. The energy and motivation to get things done is one of the biggest assets you have, emphasise it!

5.

Do not damage your credibility. Never take an apologetic air, never try to explain away the inexperience of your company or worse beg for the business. Savvy customers can smell fear at 20 paces and it is very unattractive. The less honourable prospects will make you jump through needless hoops for the fun of it. In fact, turn it into an opportunity by stating that you are not saddled by the poor practice or outdated technology that your chosen market is famous for.

6.

Dare to be honest. Share your feelings with your prospect, tell them how you are different and why they should join you now and the benefits they will get.

7.

Future proof your offering. You are probably doing something a bit different and will come across as fresh and new. Some people might think it they wait six months, you will have an even better version of what you offer. So tell them as an early customer, they are guaranteed a free or discounted upgrade and they will be amongst the first customers to know about it.
